Understanding Diabetes – Diagnosis and Treatment

When we think of diabetes medications, we think of insulation or other medicines that you involve getting a shot or a pump. But in reality, there are various types of medication that you can take as a pill or that you can inhale. Your doctor will prescribe considering what type of diabetes you have; it may also include more than one type of diabetes medicine; the end goal is to manage the patient sugar level.

Several types of medicines are out there, each class of medication works in different ways to lower down the cause of high blood sugar, some of the most common ways by which medicines acts are as follows:

  • Oral medicines work by stimulating the pancreas to produce and release more insulin
  • It also helps in inhibiting the production and release of glucose from the liver
  • Stopping the stomach enzymes that break down carbohydrates
  • It helps to improve the sensitivity of cells to insulin
  • Improve the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys
  • Decelerate the movement of food through the stomach

Now let’s discuss how it is diagnosed; it mainly involves three tests that confirm that you have the disease or not; this includes the following tests:

  1. Fasting Glucose Test- This is a test that is taken in the morning before you have eaten.
  • Oral Glucose Test- This test involves taking a glucose beverage and then having blood sugar level tested.
  • The A1c Test- It is a simple blood sugar test that shows the average of your sugar levels for the past 2-3 months.

What is the treatment of diabetes?

It is a severe disease that cannot get treated. Naturally, you have to make the right diabetes plan. In most scenarios, you need to consult a medical professional. Irrespective of the type of diabetes that you have the diabetes treatment requires keeping a close eye on your blood sugar levels with a combination of medications, exercise, and diet.

The most important thing is to eat a balanced diet that is vital for people who have diabetes, so try to have a healthy conversation with your doctor or consult a dietitian to set up a menu plan.

However, in some cases, your doctor may recommend some medications such as Invokana that is an oral medication that helps to regulate the blood sugar levels. It functions by helping the kidneys get rid of glucose from your bloodstream. It belongs to a class of drugs called sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (or SGLT2) inhibitors; it works by increasing the amount of that kind of glucose that gets passed into the urine.

What happens when blood passes through the kidneys, the kidneys filter glucose out of the blood. This protein is responsible for 90% of the glucose that is reabsorbed, so by taking this protein less glucose is reabsorbed and so more glucose is excreted via the urine.

There is a famous saying that prevention is better than the cure, so by taking proper diet, living a stress-free life and exercising regularly, you can minimize the risk of diabetes.
